Things to do

Gardens, palaces, beaches and day trips

Balchik is small, but it holds more than you expect — a world-famous garden, a queen’s palace, and a coast lined with calm places to swim and wander.

The flower-filled Botanical Garden of Balchik

Balchik Botanical Garden

One of the largest botanical gardens in the Balkans, terraced down the cliff to the sea. In spring and summer it is a riot of roses, cacti, palms and rare species — with the water always at your side.

Allow two to three hours; walking shoes worth it.

The Quiet Nest Palace above the sea at Balchik

The Quiet Nest Palace

Queen Marie’s summer residence, a graceful white complex of arcades, towers and terraces descending to the sea. Explore its rooms, courtyards and the little chapel with its golden dome.

Entry is ticketed; often combined with the garden.

Beaches, the marina and around

Small swimming beaches line the coast, the marina is lovely for an evening stroll, and easy day trips reach Cape Kaliakra, the town of Albena, or the cave monastery of Aladzha near Golden Sands.

A car or a short drive makes the most of the wider coast.
