Ask a local where to eat in Balchik and the answer is almost always the same: follow the harbour. The tavernas here grill what the boats bring in that morning, and the rest of the menu keeps the honest, generous company food of the coast.
Start with the classics
Begin with a shopska salad — tomato, cucumber, pepper and crumbled white cheese — and a cold tarator if the day is hot. Then order whatever fish was caught today, grilled and finished with lemon. A carafe of the local white wine goes with it better than any bottle we have ever chosen ourselves.
Take your time. Dinner in Balchik is a slow, sociable affair, and the tables along the seafront hold the evening light long after the sun has gone down.
