There is a particular quiet in the Balchik Botanical Garden at nine in the morning, before the crowds and before the heat. The paths are still damp, the bees are just warming up, and the whole terraced green shelf above the sea feels like a secret that might not keep.

A garden that tumbles to the sea
The garden was laid out for Queen Marie of Romania in the 1920s as part of her Quiet Nest. It holds more than two thousand species from every warm corner of the earth — cacti that look otherworldly beside palms, roses trained over old stone walls, and water channels that carry spring water down from the plateau to the Black Sea.
Come early, walk slowly, and end at the low wall where the garden meets the water. Stand there a while. The sea is doing what it has always done, and the garden asks nothing of you at all.
