About the town

Balchik, a small town on the Black Sea

A quiet corner of the Bulgarian coast, where a valley of gardens meets the water, and centuries of travellers have left their mark.

Where the hills meet the sea

Balchik sits on a limestone terrace above the Black Sea, about fifty kilometres north of Varna. It is a small, walkable town — you can cross it in an afternoon — built around a natural harbour and a long history as a fishing and trading port.

Life here moves at the pace of the seasons. In summer the beaches and the marina fill with light and conversation; the rest of the year, Balchik returns to its slow, sun-bleached self. The air smells of sea salt and lime trees, and the light off the water stays with you.
