Food & drink
Grilled fish, garden herbs and cold white wine
Bulgarian food is honest and seasonal. On the coast that means fish landed that morning, tomatoes that taste of the sun, and a cold drink to go with it.
What to eat by the sea
The harbour tavernas grill whatever the boats bring in — sea bass, turbot, sprats, calamari — served simply with lemon, a salad of tomato, cucumber and fresh white cheese, and warm bread.
Off the coast, the classics are worth seeking out: shopska salad, tarator, sweet red peppers stuffed with rice, and slow-cooked stews. And in summer, nothing beats the light white wines of the region with a plate of fish at dusk.
Five to try
- Shopska salad — tomato, cucumber, pepper, white cheese
- Tarator — cold cucumber and yogurt soup
- Grilled Black Sea fish with lemon
- Stuffed peppers with rice and herbs
- Local white wine at the marina

Where the town eats
Meals here are unhurried. Tavernas cluster around the harbour and along the seafront, most with terraces that hold the evening light. Menus are small and local; it is rare to find anything that came from far away.
Ask the taverna owner what was caught today, order it with a salad and a carafe of house wine, and let the evening take its time.
